Sunday, April 26th marked our 18th wedding anniversary…
Yes, you heard me correctly; 18 years of bliss…
Now you ask the popular question on how? I have no idea, well I do actually. Not only did I marry my best friend, but we had a ton of luck on our side.
When you plan for an outside wedding, you never expect the unexpected; or do you? In our case we had a last-minute change of plans. The day before we noticed the radar was covered in green for the following day. This only sent us into a tail spin as we searched for tents, more chairs, and a plan B.
The day started out blah and turned into even more rain than you could ever imagine. In total we had over six inches of rain by nightfall. I kept the front page of our local newspaper, and have it tucked away in our wedding album just for proof. Take note that as we had our honeymoon on the beach, it rained EVERY SINGLE DAY. Well, that is up until the day we left.
Why am I talking about rain? Here’s why…
My Grandmother was Irish, and apparently they believe that rain brings good luck. The more rain you have on the day you marry, the more luck you get in the end. At our rate we will be stuck together for a very long time.
The best thing that I can say is that the older we get, the long we are married our relationship grows stronger. Starting out as friends, must have been the right thing for us, as we already knew each others faults, strengths, and weakness. We might banter back and forth with, but in the end it’s all fun and games. We keep it playful, real, and very entertaining. I mean I write romance for a living now, that has to earn me some brownie points.. “shhh don’t tell him I said that.”
Sure just like every marriage it’s had a few speed bumps, but we decided to race over them. You know those big ones in the parking lot that you really don’t want to slow down for, that’s us. Full speed ahead as we move forward.
Hubs as I call him among a few other things is my biggest fan, my voice when I can’t speak, my will to fight when I feel like giving up. Most of all he’s mine, and I wouldn’t change a thing about the last eighteen plus years we’ve been together.
When people ask how long we’ve been together, it’s easy to respond; since the day of time. Because it’s true… Meeting your spouse in Middle School, going through the changes of life, and the hurdles of the teenage years only builds character.
What’s the trick you ask? Take one day at a time, love with all your heart, and trust that the other one will always have your back.
I’ve been fortunate over the years, and look forward to what the future holds for the two of us. Currently we have a ton of cards on the table, and the best hand will win. The good part of this is that even if the house loses, you just throw another chip down and hope the dealer hands you the full house.
Here’s to another year that will bring us joy, happiness, new adventures, and plenty of love.
