Tyler White is our featured model on A.M.’s Hump Day Magic this week. It was a pleasure working with him in this interview and we hope you all enjoy it.
What has been your favorite shoot / campaign / work to date?
My favorite shoot so far has been with Shauna Kruse, we had a full day shoot in Long Beach California. Such a crazy day because the weather was all over the place, overcast in the morning, then rain, then wind, and finally back to the perfect California weather. But looking back it all worked out because we got shots in one day that would usually take a whole week to get. And also, Shauna is so much fun to work with, we laughed all day and she made me feel very comfortable throughout the whole day. My favorite campaign would have to be the “Love in NYC” campaign by Audrey Harte. This was my first cover that I booked so I am forever grateful to her and that opportunity.
How would you describe your personal style, where do you pull your inspiration from?
I would describe my personal style as versatile. I can go from Tom Ford suited up look, to laid back California jeans and a t shirt. I feel I am very comfortable in any look but always believed that man makes the clothes, clothes never make the man. Inspiration early on came from Justin Timberlake when he brought the suit and tie look back, and also my friend Jerry Lorenzo and his ‘Fear of God’ clothing line. I get an idea or a look in my head and end up piecing it together over time.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I have plenty of hidden talents. Mostly revolving around basketball because I have played since I was 3 years old. I played in college for 5 years and played professionally for 5 years after college with the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters on their world tours so I learned plenty of tricks along the way. Needless to say I guess a hidden talent is that I can spin a basketball on almost anything, including body parts. lol
Do you get to travel a lot for your work? If so what’s your favorite city that you have visited?
I have traveled quite extensively throughout my life, usually through basketball and the Globetrotters. I’ve visited 45 countries so far and my favorite city, if I had to choose only one, was probably Crete Greece. Although I have an affinity for Barcelona Spain, Crete was one of the most beautiful cities with views of Aegean Sea, picture perfect.
Do you ever get shy in front of the camera?
Do I ever get shy in front of the camera, NO. I have lived in front of the camera or in front of audiences my whole life so I feel very comfortable with a lens in my face. It always brings out the truth in me because as the old saying goes, “camera doesn’t lie”. So I learned very young that you cant hide from the truth on camera so don’t even try.
Favorite movie?
Favorite movie, V for Vendetta.
Five things you can’t live without?
Five things I can’t live without- 1-mints (always have to have fresh breath) 2- my personal water bottle (can’t stand buying bottled water) 3-cell phone (like anyone else, but so I can always stay in contact with my little sister who lives back in Detroit with the rest of my family while I am in LA) 4- My backpack (has my toothbrush, hair gel, and blow dryer and a couple of other essentials. I try to be a minimalist when packing and always be ready for anything. 5- Passport (always ready for an adventure and live by the saying of “my bags are always packed” and ready to fly
Give us five facts about you people may not know.
1-Shoe collector
2-I play piano, and have played at my best friends wedding. (don’t be surprised if I am the guy playing the piano at the mall during the Christmas holiday)
3-I had emergency appendectomy surgery while in Madrid Spain
4-Spent a night in a jail cell in Antwerp Belgium because my friend got arrested while we were over there and we almost missed our flight out of the country (made it by 10 minutes)
5- The only show I want to see in Vegas is Celine Dions show. Everyone laughs when I say that but I think she has an incredible voice and while on tour for 5 years I would put on her playlist on my iPod and fall asleep to her everyday while on the bus.
What’s the best and worst thing about being a model?
Best thing about being a model is the relationships you make with the photographer. It’s a very intimate feeling of being naked (sometimes literally) and truthful with someone who you may have just met. Worst thing, if there is one, is the…can’t think of anything. It’s a blessing everyday someone wants to shoot because I work hard for opportunities like this and if I were to complain about any of the process I should get out because if it aint fun, then quit.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Biggest accomplishment to date is having my little sister say that I am her role model. That little girl is my heart and as long as she is happy, then I am happy.
